3 coils of 20 ft, or 7 rigid sections of 8 ft. Round stone rolls, so anything without a raised edge ends up on the lawn and in the mower: the edge has to stand proud of the finished surface, not level with it.
Weight uses 2,650 lb per cubic yard — loose delivered weight, typical for 3/8 in rounded pea gravel — rounded washed stone packs looser than crushed road gravel, and it moves with moisture and how washed the load is. Bags are the 0.5 cu ft retail size: the common 50 lb retail bag of gravel or sand.
How to estimate pea gravel for a path, bed or play area
The use decides the depth, and the depth decides everything else.
Say what the gravel is for and take the depth it offers
The use is the input that matters, because pea gravel is one of the few materials where deeper is usually worse. A walkway wants two inches and a patio an inch and a half; a dog run wants three so it drains and rinses; a play area is a different animal at a foot. Picking the use fills the depth field, and you can still overwrite it.
Measure the shape, including the bit that has to be contained
Give the length and width of the area, or the diameter if it is a circle, and switch to the trench option when you are filling a dug volume rather than dressing a surface. The perimeter comes out of those same dimensions, which is where the edging figure below the result comes from — you do not measure it separately.

How deep should pea gravel be on a path?
Two inches, over a compacted base and a woven fabric — and going deeper makes the path worse, not better. Loose rounded stone has no interlock, so what your foot rests on is only the couple of layers it can push against; below about two inches every step starts to displace stone sideways and the walk turns into wading. If the path feels loose at two inches, the fix is a firmer base underneath rather than more gravel on top.
How much pea gravel does a play area need?
Install twelve inches so that nine remain in place through the season, and extend the surfacing six feet past the equipment in every direction. Those figures come from the CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook, which works in maintained depth rather than installed depth precisely because loose fill gets kicked out of the landing zones. The same handbook does not allow loose fill at all where the fall height exceeds twelve feet. Treat all of that as reference: what certifies a surface is an ASTM F1292 impact test on the product as installed, not a depth taken off a web page.
How many bags of pea gravel make a cubic yard?
Fifty-four, at the half-cubic-foot retail bag most stores sell. That works out at roughly 2,700 lb of bags to move by hand for one yard of material, which is the real reason the crossover exists — well before the price argument, there is a point where nobody wants to lift the difference twice. Below about a quarter of a yard bags almost always win, because a delivery has a minimum load and a fee attached whether the truck is full or not.
Does pea gravel need edging?
Yes, on any surface with an edge that matters, and the edging has to stand proud of the finished gravel rather than flush with it. Every stone in a pea gravel bed is convex, which means the whole surface is a very slow liquid: foot traffic, rain and a leaf blower all move it outward, and a flush edge simply lets it flow over the top. The calculator gives the perimeter in linear feet along with the coil and stick counts, so the edge gets ordered at the same time as the stone rather than after the first mow throws gravel at a window.
Is pea gravel wheelchair accessible?
No. Loose rounded aggregate does not meet the firm, stable and slip-resistant requirement that accessible routes are held to, and a caster or a walker tip sinks into it rather than rolling across it. Where a route has to be accessible the usual answers are a stabilized aggregate held in a resin or a honeycomb grid, a compacted dense-graded surface, or a hard surface outright. Strollers hit the same wall for the same reason.
Do I need landscape fabric under pea gravel?
Under anything walked on, yes — and it wants a woven stabilization fabric, not the light non-woven weed cloth. The fabric is doing separation rather than weed control: without it, foot pressure works the stone down into the soil a little at a time, and two years later the path is thin, muddy underneath and needs topping up. In a planting bed where nothing walks, fabric is optional and often counterproductive, since it stops the bed taking amendments.
Will pea gravel stay on a slope?
Not on any meaningful grade. Round washed stone reaches its angle of repose immediately and then travels, so above roughly a five percent slope it collects at the bottom after every heavy rain and leaves the top bare. Slopes want either terracing with a retained edge at each step, or an angular crushed material that can wedge against itself instead.
About round stone, and why it never stays where you put it
Pea gravel is roughly three-eighths of an inch of river-run stone, tumbled smooth and washed free of fines. Both halves of that description do work. Tumbled smooth means every particle is convex, so no two of them can wedge against each other the way two fractured faces do — the pile has an angle of repose and nothing more. Washed free of fines means there is no dust in the load to migrate into the gaps and bind, which is what a dense-graded material does under a compactor. Put those together and you have a surface that is permanently loose by design, comfortable to look at, forgiving to fall on, and structurally incapable of holding a shape. Nearly everything people find frustrating about it is that one property showing up somewhere they did not expect it. The depth rule catches almost everyone, because it inverts the instinct that more material is a better job. On anything you walk on, the useful depth of pea gravel is about two inches, and the reason is that your weight is carried by whatever the top two or three stone diameters can push against. Give it four inches and there is nothing solid within reach of your foot, so each step displaces stone sideways and the path becomes hard work — the same effect as walking in dry sand. Compaction is not the answer either, since there is nothing to compact; the answer is a firm base beneath the gravel. That is why the patio preset here is an inch and a half rather than a round two, and why the play area, which is the one use where a deep loose layer is the whole point, sits at a foot.
The rest of the job is containment, which is why this page asks for a perimeter and reports it. A bed of round stone behaves like a very slow liquid: rain moves it, feet move it, and a mower will fire whatever reaches the lawn edge at whatever is standing behind it. An edge that stands above the finished surface holds it; an edge set flush simply gives it a ramp. Below the stone, woven fabric stops the whole layer sinking into the soil under foot traffic, which is the failure mode that makes a two-year-old path look thin.
