Courses from eave to ridge

36 courses at 5.625 in, over 16.5 ft of slope. The top course is reduced to 1.13 in of exposure. Rather than cut a sliver at the ridge, roofers usually rob a fraction of an inch from several courses on the way up, which is why the chalk lines get snapped from a course count and not from the eave.

Caps cannot be cut from architectural laminate shingles. The two plies of a laminate are bonded across the strip, and a cut cap splits along that bond once it has been bent over a ridge, so the hip-and-ridge product is not an upsell here — it is the only option.

Rounding, and where the spare bundle goes

The bundle figure is rounded up from 72.4, so between 25 squares of roof and the pallet there is already a part bundle in hand. Keep three or four whole ones rather than returning them: color lots drift between production runs, and a repair made two years later out of a bundle from the original lot is invisible where one bought fresh is not.

How to work out a shingle order

Read the wrapper, let the exposure do the arithmetic, round twice.

  1. Pick the product, then check its three numbers against the wrapper

    Choosing three-tab, architectural or heavyweight fills in a strip size, an exposure and a bundle count taken from the products most commonly stocked. Those three are what a wrapper prints, and yours may differ — a laminate exists at 5 in exposure as well as 5 5/8, and a designer shingle can be four or five bundles to the square. Read the label and overwrite anything that disagrees. The page recalculates the piece count from whatever you put in rather than from an assumption about the category.

  2. Let the exposure decide how many pieces that actually is

    Coverage is exposure times strip width, and nothing else. A 5 in reveal on a 36 in strip exposes 1.25 sq ft, which is why a square of three-tab is 80 pieces; a 5 5/8 in reveal on the 39 3/8 in metric strip exposes 1.54 sq ft and the square is 65 pieces. Fewer, larger pieces is the whole difference between the two products at the same 100 sq ft. The check panel multiplies your three fields back out and tells you when they cannot all be describing the same product.

  3. Round up to whole bundles, then to what leaves the yard

    Bundles are sold whole and pallets are banded in fixed counts, so the order goes up twice. Read the pallet split before you book delivery: a job that needs 71 bundles is one pallet and 29 loose on a 42-bundle band, and a yard will often price the second pallet keener than the loose bundles it replaces. Loose bundles also get hand-loaded and hand-carried, which is a real cost on a day when the crew would rather be on the roof.

Frequently asked questions

How many bundles are in a square?

Three, for both three-tab and standard architectural shingles, and that is the figure to plan with. The exceptions are worth knowing: heavyweight designer laminates that imitate slate or shake bury more of each course and come four to the square, occasionally five, and a few specialty products state their coverage per bundle in square feet without ever naming a bundle count. Whatever the wrapper says beats the rule, which is why the bundles-per-square field is editable rather than fixed.

Can I mix three-tab and architectural bundles on one roof?

Only across a break in the roof, never within a plane. They differ in thickness, in exposure and in where the nail line falls, so a course of one laid into a course of the other leaves a step you can see from the driveway and a fastener that lands in the wrong part of the shingle below. Where a garage or an addition is genuinely a separate roof with its own ridge, mixing is a cosmetic decision rather than a technical one — and it still shows.

Can I cut my own ridge caps instead of buying hip-and-ridge bundles?

From three-tab, yes: cut the strip at the two tab slots and one shingle gives three caps, so a 26-piece bundle covers about 32 ft of ridge at a 5 in exposure. From a laminate, no. The two plies of an architectural shingle are bonded across the strip, and a cap cut from one splits along that bond as soon as it is bent over a ridge — usually not on the day it is fitted, which is what makes it an expensive shortcut. Hip-and-ridge product for laminate roofs is not an upsell, it is the only version that survives.

What is exposure, and why does changing it change the bundle count?

Exposure is the height of each course left showing to the weather once the course above it is laid, and it is the only part of a shingle doing any covering. The rest is headlap, buried under the next row. Reduce the exposure by half an inch and every course covers less roof, so more pieces are needed to reach the same square — which is why laying tighter than the printed reveal to make a roof look denser quietly puts the job over budget and, worse, moves the nail line into the wrong zone on the shingle underneath.

The top course at the ridge works out as a two-inch sliver. What do I do?

Do not cut it that narrow. Take a fraction of an inch off several courses on the way up so the last one lands at a usable height, which is why roofers snap their chalk lines from a course count rather than measuring up from the eave each time. The course panel shows what the top course is currently reduced to so the decision gets made at the bottom of the roof rather than discovered at the top of it. A sliver course has almost no nail room above the sealant line and is the first thing to lift in a wind.

How many bundles can I stack on the roof at once?

Spread them, do not stack them. A bundle is 55 to 80 lb, so a pallet's worth landed on one spot puts well over half a ton on a couple of rafters — laid flat over the ridge in ones and twos, the same weight is nothing. The other reason to spread them is temperature: bundles stacked in a pile in July soften in the middle and take a set, and a shingle that has curled to the shape of the bundle above it never quite lies flat again.

Should I take the spare bundles back?

Keep three or four and return the rest. Asphalt shingles are made in batches and the granule blend drifts between production runs, so a repair made from a bundle out of the original lot disappears where one bought two years later reads as a patch in low sun. Store them flat and out of the sun, on their side or laid over a joist rather than folded over anything, and label them with the roof date — the color name on the wrapper stops meaning much once a manufacturer revises the blend.

About bundles, exposure and what a wrapper actually promises

Three bundles to a square is one of the few numbers in construction that almost everyone knows and almost nobody can derive, which is a problem the moment a product does not obey it. The derivation is short: a bundle covers a third of 100 sq ft because the pieces inside it, at the exposure printed on the wrapper, add up to that. Change the exposure and the count changes; change the strip size and it changes again. That is why this page treats the wrapper as the authority and the rule as a default, and why it multiplies your three figures back out and complains when they disagree. A calculator that hard-codes three bundles has no way of telling you that the designer product on your pallet is four.

The move from the old 12 by 36 inch strip to the metric 13 1/4 by 39 3/8 in laminate is the reason so much shingle advice on the web is subtly out of date. Both cover the same square; the laminate does it with 65 larger pieces instead of 80 smaller ones, which changes the nail count, the number of courses up a slope, and how much of a bundle is left when the last full course goes on. It also changed what can be cut. A three-tab strip divides cleanly at its tab slots into three caps and roofers have made ridge cap this way for decades; the bonded plies of a laminate will not take the bend, which is the single most expensive piece of misinformation still circulating about shingles.
