A bed described as 4 by 8 is almost always the outside of the frame. Nominal 2× lumber is 1.5 in thick — PS 20 surfaced dry thickness of nominal 2× lumber — so the soil actually sits in 3' 9" by 7' 9".

Freeboard is the gap between soil and rim that stops a watering can washing the mix over the side. Bottom fill is logs, branches or coarse chip in a deep bed — it comes off the soil volume, and it is only sensible below about 18 in of height.

Every bed is figured from its inside face, not its name. Bed 1 holds 7' 9" by 3' 9" of soil 10 in deep. Two board thicknesses disappear off each dimension, and on a small bed that is a larger share of the volume than anyone expects.

Fill to the top of the boards. The mix will sit about 1.5 in lower after the first thorough watering and lower again by next spring as the compost fraction is consumed, so budget a bag or two per bed each season rather than over-filling now. How to work out soil for one raised bed or six

Measure the box, choose the recipe, buy each ingredient by the bag.

  1. List every bed you are filling

    Add a row per bed with its length, width and height. Filling three beds is one shopping trip, and the ingredient totals only make sense added together — nobody buys sixty percent of a bag. Beds of different sizes are fine; each is figured separately and the totals accumulate underneath.

  2. Say whether those numbers are the outside or the inside of the frame

    Almost every bed is described by its outside dimensions, and the soil goes inside the boards. With outside selected the tool takes two board thicknesses off each direction — 1.5 inches a side for nominal 2x lumber, so a 4 by 8 bed holds 3 ft 9 in by 7 ft 9 in. Then set the freeboard, the gap you are leaving between soil and rim, and a bottom fill depth if a deep bed is getting a coarse layer underneath.

  3. Set the mix and read the list by ingredient

    The default is 60 percent screened topsoil, 30 percent compost and 10 percent perlite, pumice or bark fines. Change any share and the split follows; if they do not total a hundred they are scaled and the tool says so. The table gives cubic feet, whole bags at each ingredient's own bag size, and the yardage for anything worth ordering loose.

Frequently asked questions

How much soil does a 4 by 8 raised bed take?

About 29 cubic feet if the bed is 12 inches high, built from 2x lumber and filled to within 2 inches of the rim. The arithmetic that gets skipped is at both ends: the inside is 3 ft 9 in by 7 ft 9 in rather than 4 by 8, and the fill is 10 inches rather than 12. Work from the name on the plan and you get 32 cubic feet, so the order is about ten percent generous — which is not a disaster on a bed, and matters when it is four beds and a delivery minimum.

Are the bed dimensions inside or outside measurements?

Outside, virtually always, and the soil goes inside. A bed sold or described as 4 by 8 is 4 by 8 across the outer faces of the frame, because that is what the timber cut list produces. Nominal 2x lumber is 1.5 inches thick under the PS 20 sizing standard, so two boards take three inches off each direction. On a 4 by 8 bed that removes nine percent of the area; on a 2 by 4 bed it removes eighteen percent, which is well past the point where it changes how many bags go in the cart.

What is the right soil mix for a raised bed?

Something in the region of 60 percent mineral soil, 30 percent compost and 10 percent coarse aeration by volume, and the proportions matter more than the brand names. The mineral fraction is the body of the bed: it holds the structure up, retains nutrients rather than letting them wash through, and does not disappear over time. Compost supplies the fertility and the biology. The aeration fraction — perlite, pumice, coarse bark, even sharp sand — keeps pore space open in a container that has no subsoil under it to drain into. Mixes built from only the second and third ingredients are common online and they slump within a season.

Can I fill the bottom of a deep bed with something cheaper?

Yes, in a bed tall enough that roots never reach the layer — call it eighteen inches or more, with a solid foot of real mix above the fill. Logs, branches, coarse chip and leaves all work, and the practice is old enough to have a German name. Two things to know before doing it: the layer rots, so the surface will drop further and for longer than a normal bed, and vegetables with any depth to them will find the boundary in year one if you are optimistic about how much soil is left above it. Why does the soil level drop after the first season?

Two separate things happen and they are worth telling apart. The mix settles in the first weeks as water closes the air pockets left by handling, which is a one-off drop of roughly a sixth of the loose depth. Then the compost fraction is slowly consumed by soil life, and most of what leaves the bed leaves as carbon dioxide — that one continues for years and is the reason a bed with a high compost share keeps sinking long after it has been watered in. Neither is a fault. Plan on a bag or two per bed each spring rather than over-filling in year one.

Is bagged raised bed mix cheaper than making my own?

Not usually, and the crossover is around a single bed. Pre-blended raised bed mix in 1.5 or 2 cubic foot bags is convenient and costs several times what the same volume of bulk topsoil and compost costs delivered; for one small bed the delivery minimum swamps that difference and bags win. For three or more beds — anything past a cubic yard or so of total volume — buying the ingredients separately is both cheaper and better, because you control the ratio instead of trusting a bag that does not print one.

Do I fill the bed right to the top of the boards?

Fill to the boards, but plan the soil surface an inch or two below the rim. That gap is what stops a watering can or a hose from floating the fine fraction over the edge, and it gives you somewhere to put mulch without burying stems. It is set as freeboard here rather than assumed, because a bed that is going to be mulched wants more of it and a bed being direct-sown wants very little. Filling proud of the rim looks generous on day one and is on the path two weeks later.

About filling a box, and the three things the mix has to do

A raised bed is the one place in a garden where you choose the soil outright, and that is a bigger responsibility than it sounds. In open ground, a poor decision about organic matter is diluted by the several tons of subsoil underneath it. In a box, what you put in is the entire root zone, sitting on a base that may be lawn, may be gravel, and drains only through the bottom of the mix. That is why the standard recipe has three parts rather than two. The mineral fraction — screened topsoil — is the body: it holds shape, holds nutrients against leaching, and is the part of the bed that will still be there in ten years. Compost is the fertility and the living component. The coarse fraction, whether perlite, pumice, bark fines or sharp grit, holds pore space open so that a bed watered daily in July does not go airless. Any mix that leaves out the first ingredient grows beautifully for a season and then subsides into a low, sour, water-logged rectangle.

The measurement trap is smaller but it costs money every time. Beds are named by their outside dimensions, because that is what the cut list makes, and the soil sits inside the frame. Nominal 2x lumber measures 1.5 inches thick under the same standard that makes a 2 by 6 five and a half inches deep, so two boards take three inches off each direction. On a 4 by 8 bed that costs nine percent of the volume; on a 2 by 4 bed it is eighteen percent. Combine it with the freeboard everybody leaves below the rim and a nominal 4 by 8 by 12 inch bed needs about 29 cubic feet rather than the 32 its name implies. Multiply either error across four beds and it is the difference between one delivery and one delivery plus a trip. Then the bed drops, and it does so twice for two different reasons. The first is settling: handling leaves air in the mix and the first thorough watering closes it, which takes a few weeks and shows up as an inch or so — the same consolidation the topsoil calculator builds an allowance for. The second is slower and permanent: the compost fraction is being eaten, and that volume leaves as gas, which is set out on the compost calculator. Neither is a defect and neither is worth over-filling to prevent, because a mounded bed simply washes onto the path. Budget a couple of bags per bed each spring, top up in place, and finish the surface with a thin layer of mulch to slow the drying that a container-shaped volume of soil is prone to.
