Wallpaper counted in drops, not square feet

Wallpaper is cut in fixed lengths off a continuous bolt, so the honest count is how many drops go round the room and how many of those a bolt yields — not wall area divided by the square footage on the label, which ignores the unusable tail on every bolt. How to work out how many rolls of wallpaper to buy

Drops round the room, cut length from the repeat, then drops per bolt.

  1. Measure the perimeter and the tallest wall, then pick the bolt

    The perimeter divided by the bolt width is the number of drops that go round the room, and the last one is nearly always a part width that still costs a whole one. Take the height at the tallest corner rather than an average: a ceiling that falls two inches across a wall still has to be reached. The four put-ups cover what is actually on the shelf — 20.5 in by 33 ft and 27 in by 27 ft in the US, 53 cm by 10.05 m in Europe, and the 49.5 ft triple roll.

  2. Type the repeat off the label and say what the match is

    The repeat and the match type are printed together on the bolt label. A random match cuts each drop to the wall height plus trim and stops there. A straight match rounds every cut up to a whole number of repeats, so an 8 ft 10 in requirement against a 21 in repeat becomes a 10 ft 6 in cut and 20 in of scrap on every single drop. A half-drop adds half a repeat off the head of each bolt to reach the other side of the design.

  3. Read the bolts, then check the two panels underneath

    The answer is bolts, because a bolt is what a store hands over. Below it, one panel shows what dividing wall area by the square footage on the bolt would have told you and by how much it is short, and another shows what the repeat cost in feet per drop and in whole bolts. Add the price per bolt — the bolt, not the per-single-roll figure in the book — and the order is costed.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not just divide the wall area by the roll coverage?

Because paper comes off the bolt in one continuous length and a wall is cut in fixed lengths, so the leftover at the end of every bolt is unusable no matter how much square footage it represents. A 33 ft bolt asked for 10 ft 6 in drops gives three and leaves 18 in that cannot become a fourth. On a 14 by 12 ft room at 8 ft 6 in the area sum says eight bolts and the drop count says eleven, and three bolts is not the kind of gap a ten percent waste allowance rescues. The area method also cannot see the pattern at all, which is the other half of the problem.

What is a pattern repeat and where do I find it?

It is the vertical distance before the design starts over, printed on the bolt label beside the match type and usually between 0 and 36 inches. Its whole significance is that a drop has to be cut to a whole number of repeats so that the design meets the drop beside it at the same height, which means the cut length is the wall height rounded up rather than the wall height. A 25 in repeat on an 8 ft 6 in wall forces a 10 ft 5 in cut and throws away nineteen inches at the bottom of every drop, before a single seam has been hung.

How much extra does a half-drop match really cost?

Half a repeat off each bolt if you cut it properly, and half a repeat off every drop if you do not. Consecutive drops cut from one bolt land back on exactly the same point in the design, so they are the odd drops or the even drops but never both — cut three off a bolt and hang them as drops 1, 3 and 5 round the room, and the parity costs you nothing after the first cut. Work through the bolt in hanging order instead and every second drop needs half a repeat run off first. That is the difference between eleven bolts and fifteen on a typical room, and it is a sequencing decision rather than a material one.

Should I deduct the windows?

No, and deducting them is how orders come up short. A window leaves wall above it and wall below it, and each of those pieces has to begin at its own point in the design to line up with the full drop beside it, so a 3 ft window turns one long cut into two short ones that cannot both come from the same offcut. Doorways are different because there is nothing below them: a doorway wider than the bolt swallows a whole drop and leaves only the piece over the head, which is why this page deducts whole bolt widths inside a doorway and nothing else.

What is the difference between paste-the-wall and paste-the-paper?

Paste-the-wall papers have a non-woven backing that does not expand when it is wet, so the paste goes on the wall and the dry drop is hung straight onto it. Traditional paper backings do expand — by up to half an inch across a 20.5 in width — which is why paste-the-paper stock has to be pasted, folded and left to book for the number of minutes on the label so that the swelling finishes before the drop reaches the wall. Hanging a booked paper too soon puts the expansion into the seam, which then opens as it dries. The choice does not change the roll count, but it changes whether you need a pasting table and it decides how well the paper strips off in ten years.

Do all the bolts have to come from the same batch?

Yes — check the run or batch number on every label before leaving the counter. Wallpaper is printed in runs and the ink is mixed per run, so two bolts of the same pattern from different runs are close enough to pass on the shelf and visibly different where they meet on a seam. That is also the case for ordering the spare at the same time rather than later: a reprint six months on will not match, so the offcut you keep rolled in a closet is the only repair material that ever will.

How much do I trim off the top and bottom of a drop?

Two inches at each end is the working default and it is doing two jobs at once. Part of it is slack for sliding the drop up or down until the pattern meets its neighbor; the rest absorbs a ceiling line or a floor that is out of level, which almost every house older than about thirty years has. It is also the single most leveraged number on this page, because the cut length is rounded up to the repeat afterwards: on an 8 ft 6 in wall with a 21 in repeat, going from two inches to one at each end drops the cut from 10 ft 6 in to 8 ft 9 in and saves a full repeat on every drop.

About the pattern repeat, and why roll coverage is the wrong number

Every bolt of wallpaper carries a square footage on its label and that figure is very nearly useless, because paper is not laid like a carpet or spread like a coating. It is cut into vertical drops of one fixed length and hung side by side, and what is left at the end of the bolt when the last whole drop has been taken off it is scrap whatever its area. A 33 ft bolt cut into 10 ft 6 in drops yields three and orphans 18 inches. Divide that same bolt’s 56.4 square feet into a 422 square foot room and the answer is eight bolts; count the drops and it is eleven. The gap is not waste and no percentage allowance closes it — it is the difference between a step function and a slope, and the step is what a store sells.

The pattern repeat is what sets that step, and it is the reason this page exists. A straight-match paper has to meet its neighbor at the same point in the design, so a drop is not cut to the wall height, it is cut to the wall height rounded up to a whole number of repeats. An 8 ft 6 in wall needs 8 ft 10 in of paper with trim on both ends; against a 21 in repeat that becomes six repeats, 10 ft 6 in, and 20 inches leave the job at the bottom of every single drop before anything is hung. A half-drop adds a second effect on top: alternate drops start half a repeat down the design, so a bolt has to be run on to reach the other parity. The usual advice — add half a repeat to every cut — overstates that badly, because consecutive drops cut off one bolt land back on the same point in the design and are simply hung as the odd drops or the even ones. Cut by parity and the half-drop costs half a repeat once per bolt; cut in hanging order and it costs half a repeat every time.

Two other habits are worth unlearning. The first is deducting windows: the piece above a window and the piece below it each have to start at their own place in the design, so a window turns one long cut into two short ones and typically costs paper rather than saving it. Doorways are the genuine exception, because nothing goes below them, and a doorway wider than the bolt does swallow a whole drop. The second is ordering in instalments — bolts are printed in runs and the ink is mixed per run, so a second order months later will not match on a seam and the offcut kept rolled in a closet is the only repair stock that ever will.
