That spread is the number that wrecks orders. A ton is a ton whichever bin it comes out of, but the 5 to 8 in covers 4 times less ground than the 3/4 to 1 in, because you cannot lay an eight-inch stone two inches deep. Pricing two sizes against each other per ton compares nothing.

How to work out river rock by coverage

Size first — everything else on this page follows from it.

  1. Choose the stone size before anything else

    Size is the input that decides the answer here, because it sets the shallowest layer the stone can physically make. Three-quarter to one inch lies two inches deep and reads as a continuous surface; five to eight inch rock is placed by hand and cannot be laid shallower than the stones are tall. Picking a class fills the depth field with that minimum single layer.

  2. Say whether it is a surface or a dug volume

    A stone mulch bed is a layer, so its depth comes from the stone. A dry creek bed is four inches in the channel, and it is worth measuring the wetted width across the dip rather than the width between the tops of the banks — the difference is usually a third of the tonnage. A drainage bed or trench is neither: it is a hole you already dug, and coverage per ton stops meaning anything.

  3. Read the tons, and take the fabric count with it

    The headline is short tons because river rock is quoted and loaded by weight almost everywhere. Underneath it, the table shows what a ton covers in each of the four size classes at their own minimum depths, which is the comparison to make before you decide that the bigger stone is worth the same price per ton. How much area does a ton of river rock cover?

Between about 116 and 29 square feet, depending entirely on the stone size. A ton is roughly 19 cubic feet of loose rock at 2,800 lb per cubic yard, and dividing that by the depth gives the coverage: 116 sq ft for 3/4 to 1 in laid two inches deep, 77 sq ft for 1 to 3 in at three inches, 46 sq ft for 3 to 5 in at five inches, and 29 sq ft for 5 to 8 in at eight inches. That is a fourfold spread from one input, and it is the single number people get wrong when they price two sizes against each other by the ton.

How deep should river rock be laid?

As deep as the stone is tall, and no deeper, for anything that is meant to read as a covered surface. Depth on a decorative bed is not a design choice but a consequence: you cannot lay a five-inch stone three inches deep without leaving fabric showing between the pieces, and there is nothing to gain by doubling a layer that is already opaque. The exception is a dug application — a French drain, a dry well, a bedding layer around pipe — where the depth is whatever the excavation is and the stone is filling a volume rather than dressing one.

What size river rock is right for a dry creek bed?

Mostly 1 to 3 in through the channel, with a scattering of 3 to 5 in and a few larger placed stones to break the line up. A creek bed done entirely in one size looks like a trench full of gravel, and one done entirely in large stone has gaps you can turn an ankle in. The small material also stays put in a downpour, which is the actual function: anything below about an inch will be somewhere else after the first storm the bed was built to carry.

How much landscape fabric goes under river rock, and what width?

More than the bed area, because every seam laps the one beside it by six inches. That overlap comes off the usable width of every roll, so a four-foot roll only puts three and a half feet of ground under stone and a three-foot roll only two and a half. Buying to the label width is how people end up one strip short at the far side of a bed. This page counts the strips across the narrow dimension, multiplies by the run and converts that into 100 ft rolls.

Does river rock stop weeds permanently?

For two or three seasons, then it becomes a seed bed itself. What grows through rock is rarely coming up from beneath: it is windblown dirt and leaf litter settling into the gaps between stones and forming exactly the thin, well-drained layer that weeds like. Fabric underneath delays it by stopping perennial roots pushing up, and it does nothing about the debris arriving from above, which is why the maintenance job on a rock bed is blowing it out rather than pulling from it.

Is river rock better than mulch around plants?

It lasts indefinitely and it feeds nothing, which is the trade in one sentence. Organic mulch breaks down into the soil and has to be topped up, and that decomposition is the point for a planting bed. Stone never needs replacing, but it also radiates absorbed heat into whatever is growing next to it, works its way permanently into the soil surface, and cannot be dug through when the planting changes. It suits foundation strips, side yards and drainage lines far better than it suits a perennial border.

How hard is it to take river rock out again?

Hard enough to be worth pricing before it goes down. A 200 sq ft bed of 1 to 3 in stone laid three inches deep is about 2.6 tons that has to leave by shovel and wheelbarrow, and once it has been in place a few years the bottom layer is set into the soil and the fabric beneath it has usually torn into pieces around it. Rock is the least reversible decision available in a garden bed, which is the strongest argument for measuring carefully rather than ordering an extra ton to be safe.

About coverage per ton, and why stone size changes the price of a bed

River rock is sold by weight and used by area, and the conversion between those two runs straight through the stone size. A short ton is a fixed quantity of rock — a little under three-quarters of a cubic yard, or about nineteen cubic feet at a typical loose density. Spread that nineteen cubic feet two inches deep and it dresses 116 square feet. Spread the same ton eight inches deep, which is the shallowest a five-to-eight-inch stone can be laid without gaps, and it covers 29. Nothing about the material changed; only the depth its own geometry forces on you. This is why a quote of the same dollars per ton for two size classes is not the same offer, and why “how many tons do I need” cannot be answered before “which size”.

Depth on a decorative layer is therefore a consequence rather than a preference. There is no reason to lay two courses of stone where one is already opaque, and no way to lay one course thinner than the stones are tall. What that means in practice is that the small classes are the ones that behave like a coverage material and the large ones behave like an object you place — five-to-eight-inch rock is bought by look and by the piece, and estimating it by the square foot at all is stretching the model. Dug applications sit outside this entirely: a French drain, a dry well or a bedding layer is a volume you already excavated, and coverage per ton is irrelevant to it. For the same reason, an area measured in fractions of an acre rather than in feet is easier to size on the acre calculator before it comes here.

The fabric below the stone is the part people under-buy, and it is under-bought for an arithmetic reason rather than a judgement one. Rolls are labelled by their full width, but each strip has to lap the one next to it by about six inches or the seam opens and soil comes up through it, so a four-foot roll delivers three and a half feet of covered ground and a three-foot roll delivers two and a half. Over a wide bed that difference accumulates into a whole extra strip. It is also worth being clear about what the fabric is for: separation, so the rock does not sink into the soil and the soil does not push up into the rock. Weed suppression is a side effect with a short life, since within a few years the gaps between stones fill with windblown debris and become a seed bed of their own. Where the bed is planted and meant to stay alive, mulch and a proper depth of topsoil do more for it than stone ever will.
